AI Is Transitioning From Experiment to Business Process: What the Latest U.S. Census Data Say About Small Companies
AI is rapidly transitioning from an experimental technology to a business process for many organizations. An analysis of the latest U.S. Census Bureau Business Trends and Outlook Survey data reveals some important trends in what is likely to be a prolonged business transformation. AI adoption is far from universal, but businesses with greater resources continue to enjoy a significant advantage over their smaller competitors. As of the survey period of December 2025 – May 2026, the business use of AI was between 17% and 20% across all firms. However, as of May 3, 2026, the figure was 37% for businesses with 250+ employees versus under 20% for firms with 4 or fewer workers.

Such opportunities are particularly attractive to small businesses, which typically do not have the resources to develop and implement new technologies in-house. At a time when many industries are being reshaped by disruptive innovations, implementation specialists will be in demand. A national retailer, an international professional-services group, a franchisor, or a property manager may want to apply AI technologies to better organize their operations. Yet the typical small company does not have the expertise to identify, implement, and optimize such tools. Thus, there will be demand for implementation specialists who can advise and assist businesses in adopting AI in their niche.
The most compelling opportunities will be created by processes that address a particular business need. Rather than promoting generalized AI benefits, such as efficiency gains or cost reductions, an implementation-focused firm will be able to identify a crucial business problem and demonstrate how a specific automation will help. For instance, a small contractor-chasing service may want to use AI to qualify leads automatically. Similarly, a professional-services company may seek to standardize its internal documentation and other processes. In most cases, the value of AI will be derived from its ability to resolve a discrete business issue. Therefore, the economic value generated by such solutions will become apparent to business owners, enabling such firms to generate steady revenues from implementation, operation, management, and training services.
Many AI applications are not straightforward, however, and may interfere with critical business processes. For instance, AI tools may produce incorrect results, raise privacy concerns, and introduce other issues that require human oversight. Additionally, the Census data suggest that many firms are using artificial intelligence sparingly and strategically. At this stage, most businesses are only applying AI to one business function, and 57% of adopters only used it in 3 or fewer areas. As such, businesses must carefully consider the risks and rewards of introducing such technologies.
At a conceptual level, an analysis of the census data suggests that businesses should think of AI investments as opportunities to improve critical processes rather than purchase software licenses and other assets. A small firm that adopts one business process to organize its operations and reduce the time spent on administrative duties by ten hours per week will yield more benefits than a company that uses ten different applications but only implements one of them.
